Jeffrey Sandman recently participated in the fourth annual Science and Technology in Society (STS) forum in Kyoto, Japan at the invitation of the then Japanese Finance Minister, Koji Omi. The Davos-like meeting is designed for open discussion regarding the further progress of science and technology for the sake of humankind while controlling ethical, safety and environmental issues resulting from it. Participants included top CEOs, elected officials, policymakers, Nobel laureates, scientists, researchers and media from all over the world.
Of particular note were dialogues on the political forces that influence decisions on climate change, approaches to address infectious diseases in the developing world, intellectual property issues, and a high level discussion of stem cell research and its scientific applications and ethical guidelines.
